How to write a strong CV as a intern

Concrete, no clichés — what works with recruiters.

The work-experience paradox: leadership beats odd jobs

As a student you have little work experience — that's fine. What recruiters at McKinsey, Bain, Goldman Sachs and Unilever look for in placement candidates is not years of experience but SIGNALS of leadership, ownership and intellectual curiosity. A role as president of a student society (with concrete numbers: member count, budget, sponsor deals) weighs more heavily than two years on tills.

Predicted grades, honours tracks and case competitions

For strategy consulting and investment banking, grades are literally a filter (top 5-10% of your cohort). Mention your predicted classification (First / 2:1), your dean's list status, and case-competition results ("McKinsey Insight 2025 case finalist" — this triggers a conversation). Stating availability explicitly ("from February 2026, 5 months") helps recruiters slot you into their planning.

Making small jobs big — honestly

A student job at Tesco can be a strong story if you make it concrete: "Promoted to shift coach after 8 months" shows you stood out; "Owner of the assortment reset process" shows ownership. Avoid overclaiming ("revolutionised the store") — UK recruiters spot that immediately.
